Description

IGCT/IGBT modules are self-contained packages that include the power semiconductor devices, gate drivers, and cooling system. This makes them easy to install and use, and reduces the complexity of the power electronics system.

IGCT modules are based on the integrated gate-commutated thyristor (IGCT) device.  IGCTs are high-power semiconductor switches that are known for their high voltage and current ratings, and their ability to handle high overloads.  However, IGCTs have relatively slow switching speeds and high turn-on losses.

IGBT modules are based on the insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) device.  IGBTs are high-power semiconductor switches that combine the best features of bipolar junction transistors (BJTs) and MOSFETs.  IGBTs have high voltage and current ratings, fast switching speeds, and low conduction losses.

Applications

IGCT/IGBT modules are used in a wide range of industrial applications, including:

High-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission: HVDC transmission is used to transmit electricity over long distances with low losses.  IGCT/IGBT modules are used in the converter stations that convert AC electricity to DC and back again.
Variable frequency drives (VFDs): VFDs are used to control the speed and torque of electric motors.  IGCT/IGBT modules are used in the power electronics stage of VFDs to convert AC electricity to variable frequency and voltage.
Renewable energy systems:  IGCT/IGBT modules are used in the power electronics systems of renewable energy systems such as wind turbines and solar panels.
